Step 1.
As a classroom, talk about the things that make the students smile and narrow them down to ten things. There are a variety of ways to do this, how you decide to come up with the list of ten with your class is up to you. Here are a few suggestions:
- As a class, have the students suggest things that make them smile or laugh and write all the items on the board. Then review the list with the entire class, and narrow down to ten things that the kids most agree on.
- Divide your class into ten work groups. Each group is responsible for coming up and agreeing on one thing that makes them smile.
- Ask each student to submit a list of ten things that make him/her smile and compile the answers. Randomly select 10 from the compiled list.
Step 2.
For each item on the list, create an image to represent that item, such as a digital photo, a drawing, or a painting. Encourage the students to be creative. Each image should be accompanied by descriptive text to help tell a story of why the item makes them smile.
Step 3.
Upload the completed activity onto the Web site to share your project with other classrooms.
NOTE: This activity can follow a theme for a more directed exercise. Some possible themes are:
- Things about school that make me smile.
E.g. Recess, running around the playground.- Things about a special holiday (e.g. Christmas or New Years) that make me smile.
E.g. Decorating the Christmas tree, Making and eating holiday treats.- Things about my family that make me smile.
E.g. grandpa makes the best milkshake, my little cousin makes a mess when he eats.
