Excellent, although some sections, especially those dealing with current political realities, are out of date. Useful text aimed at middle school students written by an Afghan-American. Provides useful detailed information on games and other issues of interest to young people, with bibliography and index.

Dupree, Louis. Afghanistan. Princeton University Press, 1973. 778 pages. This classic is still considered the definitive scholarly introduction to Afghanistan.

Lamb, Christina. Sewing Circles of Herat: My Afghan Years. London: Harper Collins, 2002. 338 pages. A British journalist writes of her experiences while covering events in Afghanistan in the late 1970's during the mujahideen struggle against the Soviets and again in 2001 at the time of the US intervention following 9/11.
